MORRIGAN'S RAVEN
Herbal Ritual Salve for Protection, Sovereignty & Threshold Work
 
There are times upon the path when we are called not to retreat from the darkness, but to stand firmly within our own strength.
 
One of my longstanding Hedgefaery preparations, this handcrafted herbal ritual salve was created in honor of the Morrígan and the dark corvid imagery woven through Irish tradition—a preparation for protection, sovereignty, spirit work, transformation, and those times when we find ourselves standing at a threshold. This is a salve I return to when the work calls for strong boundaries, courage, discernment, and the willingness to move through uncertainty without surrendering our own center.
 
The Morrígan & the Raven
The Morrígan is a complex and powerful presence within medieval Irish tradition, associated with themes of sovereignty, prophecy, conflict, fate, and transformation.
Corvid imagery also appears within traditions surrounding her, contributing to the enduring relationship between the Morrígan and the symbolism of ravens and crows in modern spiritual practice.
 
I approach her here not simply as an aesthetic or symbol of darkness, but with respect for the complexity of the stories and traditions that surround her. Raven, too, has been an important presence within my own spiritual path for many years. To me, Raven speaks of intelligence and observation, mystery and transformation—the ability to remain watchful at the boundary between what is known and what has yet to reveal itself.
 
Crafted Through Herbal Infusion
Unlike a salve made primarily from wax and fragrance, the heart of Morrigan's Raven is the plants themselves.
The preparation begins with carefully selected herbs, woods, and botanicals infused into organic olive oil for approximately two to three weeks.
Once the plants have given themselves to the oil, the botanicals are carefully strained and the resulting herbal infusion is blended with pure golden beeswax.
 
Deep woodland notes of Balsam Fir, Juniper, and Patchouli essential oils complete the preparation. Each batch is created slowly, by hand, and in small quantities.
 
The Plant Allies
Rowan Wood
Long associated in European folk tradition with protection and safeguarding, particularly around boundaries and liminal places.
Bog Myrtle
A plant of wild landscapes, moorland, and ancient places, carrying something of the untamed land into this preparation.
Mugwort
Traditionally associated with dreaming, divination, intuition, and threshold work.
Ivy
A symbol of endurance, persistence, devotion, and the mysteries of death and renewal.
Mullein
Associated in folk tradition with protection, courage, illumination, and finding one's way through darkness.
St. John's Wort
Traditionally worked with as an herb of protection, blessing, and solar strength.
Together, these plants create a preparation intended not to remove us from difficult or liminal experiences, but to accompany us as we move through them with awareness and strong boundaries.
 
Working With Morrigan's Raven
Use a small amount to anoint the wrists or other external pulse points before:
Protection and boundary-setting rituals
Meditation or divination
Spirit work and pathworking
Shadow work
Threshold and Otherworld practices
Rituals centered upon sovereignty or personal strength
Work honoring the Morrígan or Raven
Times of transition when courage and discernment are needed
 
It may also be used to anoint appropriate ritual tools as part of a protection or dedication practice. Test a small inconspicuous area first when working with delicate materials.

Morrigan's Raven has been part of my Apothecary for many years and remains one of the preparations especially close to my heart. It brings together several threads that have shaped my own practice: plants and their folklore, the wisdom of the land, Raven, the mysteries of the Otherworld, and the understanding that strength does not always mean fighting. Sometimes strength is knowing where you stand. Sometimes it is knowing what you will protect. And sometimes it is simply having the courage to cross the next threshold.
